ANJ Electric, a Rhode Island division of McDonald Electrical Corporation, delivered electrical upgrades for the Davey Lopes Recreation Center in Providence, supporting the city’s efforts to modernize a key community facility.

ANJ Electric’s team worked on this municipal project alongside architect BH+A and Allied Consulting Engineering Services. The project involved the installation of a new building electrical service and emergency power system within an active recreation center featuring a gym, pool, and boiler basement.

Project Scope:

  • New Service & Switchgear: Removal of existing equipment and installation of new switchgear and upgraded electrical service to support the facility’s operational needs.
  • Emergency Power System: Furnishing and installation of a new diesel generator and automatic transfer switch (ATS) to ensure reliable backup power
  • System Integration: Coordination of new equipment with existing building systems while maintaining functionality of the active facility.

Special Challenges:

This project required careful coordination and adaptability. Midway through construction, utility gas pressure limitations prompted a change from a planned gas generator to a diesel system, requiring redesign and field adjustments. Additionally, concurrent construction projects within the facility required tightly managed shutdowns and coordination across multiple trades to minimize disruption to operations.

Through strong communication, precise scheduling, and technical expertise, our team successfully delivered a reliable and modernized electrical infrastructure that enhances the resiliency and long-term performance of the recreation center.
