McDonald Electrical Completes Landmark South Station Tower & Transit Hub Project
McDonald Electrical Corporation is proud to announce the successful completion of our work on the South Station Tower & Transportation Hub, one of the most transformative projects in Boston’s recent history.
Located in the heart of the city, South Station is the busiest train station in New England, serving more than 30 million passengers annually. The expansion and modernization project included a new 51-story mixed-use tower as well as major upgrades to the bus terminal and rail platforms — all while keeping the station operational for daily commuters.
A project like this required constant communication and trust between trades, with the client, and among our own crews. Our team was flexible, efficient, and incredibly detail-oriented. We prioritized safety and took pride in doing it right the first time.
McDonald Electricals Scope of Work
As the only electrical contractor for this milestone project, we handled the integration of old systems with new infrastructure. McDonald Electrical was responsible for a wide range of complex installations, including:
- New electrical infrastructure supporting the 51-story South Station Tower.
- Coordination of electrical systems in an active, high-security transit hub, minimizing disruption to daily operations.
- Upgraded Public Address (PA) Systems for both the bus terminal and rail yard, including ADA-compliant digital signage for visual paging.
- Conversion of the South Station Rail PA system from analog to digital, improving clarity, reliability, and accessibility.
Meeting the Challenge
The South Station project required careful planning, innovation, and teamwork. Crews often worked overnight to perform upgrades during low-traffic windows. McDonald collaborated closely with Suffolk Construction, MBTA, Amtrak/Keolis, and other key partners to safely deliver high-quality results in one of Boston’s most heavily trafficked public spaces.
