Scope :McDonald Electrical’s comprehensive ground-up electrical scope at Parcel 1B (formerly The Merano), located at Bulfinch Triangle in Boston’s North End’s entails installation of the primary power and electrical distribution systems, and emergency power at the 14-story hotel and residential high-rise. The project includes a new 5000 Amp electrical distribution system and tie-in to an Eversource transformer vault, as well as installation of the building’s collector bus, and separate bus duct risers that feed both the hotel and the residential units. The facility’s fire alarm system, smoke control system, bi-directional BDA, lighting, and general duty power are all integral aspects of the electrical scope.
Challenges :The project is being constructed directly over the existing Interstate 93 (I-93) tunnel structure that extends out to the Zakim Bridge, which limited the underground infrastructure and utilities. The phased project features Temporary Occupancy parameters, presenting challenges that the electrical team will meet regarding the installation and turnover of the life-safety systems.
